Fine art

"I feel I am a witness, or - rather - one of the witnesses to the shadows in which the mentally ill live."

Born in 1945, Alfonso Madden studied fine art at Exeter Art College. Thereafter, for several years, he worked as a mental health nurse in a psychiatric hospital in the late sixties and early seventies. His experiences imbued in him a deep feeling of compassion for the suffering of the patients, and this is expressed in some of his important works - particularly his illustrations which accompanied the seminal poems of Gertrude Portisch in the mid 1970s. He is an extremely versatile artist and a very fine illustrator, and has a huge portfolio of botanical and wildlife illustrations to his name as well as whimsical illustrations for children's books. He is still painting and lives with his partner in the Dordogne area of France.
